The Value of Reamers in Your Toolbox
When it comes to purchasing certain tools like a set of reamers, it can be difficult to justify the expense. This is especially true if there are other viable options available such as using a step drill bit. However, in many cases it is important to consider not only the initial expense, but also all of the other variables such as equipment wear, project materials, and overall effectiveness.
When considering whether or not reamers a good investment, you can start by looking at how long they will last compared to a step drill bit doing the same job. In general, if you are trying to finish a hole, then there is a good chance that you will be creating a lot of friction. There are a variety of situations in which a reamer will not create nearly as much friction which means several things in terms of cost. The first is that there will be less overall wear and tear, which means less replacements in the future. Second, it means that you can use less lubricant during the job. Finally, it increases the odds that you will complete the project right the first time, which means less total materials needed during production.
Reamers also have the added benefit of being able to work with nearly any type of material and with holes at any depth. The reason that they are so versatile is that they are only used for finishing, not the entire creation process. On the other hand, a step drill bit is most effective for fiberglass, plexiglass, and thin sheet metal and is also capable of use for creating the initial hole. Moreover, a step drill bit is limited to use in materials less than an eighth of an inch thick.
The final thing to consider is overall effectiveness. Reamers are designed specifically for finishing purposes. This means that there is minimal chance that it this tool will cause any cracking or tearing on the surface. Additionally, if there is anything that a reamer can deliver on, it is precision. While other methods of drilling can often be very accurate, none of them can compare when looking at the bigger picture, especially spanning over the lifetime of the equipment. Some projects may not require exact precision, in which case another tool could be utilized instead. However, when accuracy is paramount, such is the case when creating multiple layers that need to align perfectly, then there is only one option that will deliver consistent results.
Reamers are regarded as one of the more expensive “accessory tools” on the market. However, their overall utility often outweighs the initial expense. When taking into consideration their exceptionally long lifespan, ability to work with any material effectively, and consistent precision and accuracy, they are often the best option available. However, there are situations when using a step drill bit could be equally effective; particularly if you are working with thin sheet metal, glass, or plastic/glass composite.
As is the case with many situations, it all comes down to your particular needs. If you would only use this tool once every few years, then you may get by just fine using the tools you already have in your box. However, if you would use it even as little as once a year for several years straight is could prove to be a wise purchase.
