Describe the principles of how an orifice flow meter measures flow.And why it is important to correct the meter for actual temperature and pressure at flow conditions when measuring gas flow rates?
The heart of an orifice plate flow meter is the actual orifice (hole) in the orifice plate. The natural phenomena of the process is the fact that for a given flow through an orifice, the pressure drop across that orifice is proportional to the square root of the pressure drop. For instance, with an orifice plate calibrated to produce 100 inch water column pressure drop at 100 gallons per minute, there will be 10 roots ( 1 through 10), each representing 10% of the flow. A 1 inch WC drop will indicate the first root or 10% (10gallonss). At 16 inches WC drop, the flow rate is 40% of the 100 gallons per minute.
The flow is compensated because pressure plays a role in the actual measurement; the temperature rise tend to expand the orifice diameter, degrading the accuracy.
